Portrait Painting Masterclass

Sunday, 16 April 2023, 10 am to 4 pm

Location: Gasworks Arts Park
The Art and Craft Room
21 Graham Street, Albert Park, Victoria.

All levels of artistic ability are welcome. Explore your portrait painting skills in a safe, non-judgemental environment.

Jaq will demonstrate her process of working from a photo to create a portrait. You will look at blocking in the form and capturing a likeness, modelling, tone, and colour.

Bring a photo of a loved one or someone you would love to paint. And if you don’t have anything, Jaq can provide some fantastic reference material so that you can create a beautiful work of art while developing techniques. But if you can provide your own reference, it’s an excellent opportunity to create a special portrait of someone you love.

You will learn each step:

  • starting with a tonal ground
  • what to keep and take out of the photo reference, so it’s your own art
  • blocking in the portrait
  • colour mixing
  • effective techniques
  • ensuring you have the likeness and essence of the person
  • tying everything together
  • varnish options

Basic materials are provided, and you are also welcome to supplement with your own if you like.
(We can chat about this prior to the workshop :))

Snacks will be provided for morning tea, and there’s a lovely cafe at Gasworks where you can purchase lunch during the lunch break.
