This fine art print is reproduced from the original oil painting by Jaq Grantford, winner of the 2019 Kennedy Art Prize for Beauty. It depicts Ken Atherton, better known as Tootsie, a pioneering figure in Melbourne’s drag scene.
Arrested at 20 solely for being gay, Tootsie endured two years in Pentridge and the weight of societal prejudice. Yet at 62, he embraced a new chapter, performing in drag across Melbourne’s iconic venues and becoming known as the oldest drag queen in the southern hemisphere, drawing audiences in the thousands.
He passed away weeks after seeing his portrait, thrilled to be recognized and celebrated for who he truly was.
