“It wasn’t that long ago that a painting of someone disabled would never be painted like this, let alone hung.” These were Lisa McManus’s words when she first saw her portrait by Jaq Grantford.

Meeting Lisa and painting her was an extraordinary experience. She radiates dynamic energy while embodying dignity, resilience, and quiet strength.

Fifty-eight years ago, when Lisa was born, the midwife assisting her delivery fled the room, shocked by her severely malformed arms – a result of thalidomide, a drug prescribed in the late 1950s and early 1960s, often for morning sickness. Although Lisa’s mother only took two tablets, it was enough to shape Lisa’s life forever. She was conceived seven months after authorities were warned about thalidomide’s dangers, yet public warnings were ignored.

Throughout her life, Lisa has campaigned tirelessly for justice for thalidomide survivors and their families. Her efforts led to a Senate inquiry into the government’s response and were instrumental in securing support for survivors.
